Speaking earlier this week, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg has confirmed that this year's Call of Duty will be primarily developed with Next-Gen hardware in mind. I had previously reported that the next Call of Duty title will be developed by Sledgehammer Games who had previously worked with Infinity Ward on Modern Warfare 3. It would seem that the pressure is on for Sledgehammer to produce a true Next-Gen experience.
Hirshberg explained: “Sledgehammer is approaching this as a next-gen-first development...Obviously in the console-transition year, anyone who developed a cross-generational game last year had to deal with the fact that the technology of the next-gen platforms was still coming into focus and changing quite a bit during the development process…. Now that we have the next-gen hardware out in the marketplace and solid, that is our primary development.”
There is still no indication of what Sledgehammer has planned although the money's on Modern Warfare 4. Hirshberg went on to say that despite the next Call of Duty title being primarily developed for Next-Gen, it will still be a great Current-Gen title: “There are still a lot of people playing on current gen, and we want to deliver a great experience for them as well. But it will be a next-gen-first production and the current-gen game will be a version of that.”
The will still be a version of the game on Xbox 360.
My main concern stems from the last statement. How 'Next-Gen' can the next Call of Duty be when older consoles are still supported? Are Activision merely referring to a 1080p 60fps experience? Only time will tell but there are always limitations when old hardware holds back new hardware.
