Devin Graham released yet another amazing video today. Devin continues to produce incredible films that we just can’t get enough of. We recently caught up with him to discuss his new Far Cry 3 video and he gave us a little taste of what it takes to put such an awesome film together.
Q: What was involved in filming the Far Cry 3 video and where was it filmed?
A: I made it with the support of the Far Cry 3 team and Ubisoft. They were the ones that funded it, and gave me full creative control. They gave me a budget where I could film on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. I flew three other friends down there, two other crew members and the lead actress Leanna Pareja. We filmed almost the entire video at Kualoa Ranch, which is where movies such as Jurassic Park, 50 First Dates, and the TV show LOST were filmed. Far Cry 3 takes place in the jungle on a tropical island, so that was the take on why we filmed it in Hawaii. I used to live on Oahu for a year, so I had a lot of connections with the people down there, so that's where I got all my extras.
Q: When it comes to the concept of the video, did you try to stay true to the video game or create your own story?
A: We tried to stay as true to the game as possible. My friends at weaponblender.com hooked us up with the same guns they used in the video game (they were airsoft guns, but looked real), and they provided all the military costumes that the bad guys wear in the video. As far as the concept of the video, I wanted to stay as true to the game as possible. It is a first person shooter so that is what I was going off of. Far Cry 3 features a lot of vehicle riding, and even shooting with a bow and arrow. I wanted to bring those to life in the video, so we have us shooting with a bow and arrow, and we have us riding in a jeep and a boat, with some Jet Ski action as well. There have been many people do first person shooter videos in real life, but none of them have had a story with dialog. That is what we wanted to do with this project, have a character that we followed and interacted with, so that's why we have another character played by Leanna so we could interact with someone, so it could carry the story as if we were playing with someone.
Q: What are you planning on releasing next?
A: As far as my plans after this release, I will be following up with it the following week with our Halo first person shooter, which I'm super stoked on releasing. We have done more work on the Halo video then any video I have ever made, especially with all the visual effects.
